The Global Network for Zero Broadens Its Latin American Footprint, Partnering With Chile GBC
The Global Network for Zero (GNFZ) and Chile Green Building Council (GBC) have formed a strategic partnership to promote the net zero transformation of buildings and portfolios in Chile through industry-leading best standards, implementation, certifications, and reporting. This marks a continuation of GNFZ’s commitment to decarbonizing Latin America, coming on the heels of its partnership with the Peru Green Building Council.
Chile GBC, a nonprofit organization and member of the World Green Building Council, works to promote sustainable construction, technological innovation, and efficient use of resources to improve the quality of life, health and well-being of people and their communities.
This partnership contributes to the meaningful progress Chile has made over the last few years to lower carbon emissions. With the adoption of the Framework Law on Climate Change in 2022, Chile has committed to reaching net zero by 2050. Chile currently ranks third in the regional carbon emissions rankings, and buildings in the country are responsible for almost a quarter of the country's total energy consumption in 2021 and 7% of Chile’s total GHG emissions, making it a prime target for net zero solutions and technologies.
“As with everything Chile GBC does, the impact of this partnership goes beyond Chile,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, President and CEO of GNFZ, “The Chile GBC is a global champion of decarbonization, leading market transformation in Chile and the Latin American region, relentlessly advocating and working towards expanding the green building movement. Our partnership will work to improve the quality of life for all Chileans so that future generations can live in a healthier, more sustainable world. I am particularly looking forward to once again working with María Fernanda Aguirre, Executive Director of Chile GBC and a GNFZ Advisor. She is a formidable force in the green building movement and her expertise will greatly benefit both GNFZ and Chile GBC members.”
Chile GBC is also a member of the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (Global ABC UNEP) and a South American Industry partner for the GRESB sustainable investment platform. Through these networks, Chile GBC works for the preservation and efficient use of resources, accelerating the transformation of the construction industry for sustainability, resilience, health, and regeneration.
“We look forward to working with GNFZ to help our members reach net zero and are thrilled to collaborate with their team of industry leaders to advance Chile’s climate goals,” said María Fernanda Aguirre, Executive Director of Chile GBC and a GNFZ Advisor. “Together, we can help Chile and the surrounding region of Latin America, lead by example on climate impact.”
As part of the alliance, GNFZ's world premier net zero certification programs will be made available to Chile GBC’s members and clients. The partnership will also deliver education and training support to Chile GBC members.
