Advancing Green Building in Latin America: The Global Network for Zero Partners with Peru Green Building Council
The Global Network for Zero (GNFZ) and the Peru Green Building Council (GBCpe) have formed a strategic partnership set to transform sustainable building practices across Peru and the broader Latin American region. This collaboration aims to accelerate the shift to net zero in buildings and real estate portfolios by establishing leading industry standards, streamlining certification processes, enhancing sustainability reporting, and promoting the adoption of cutting-edge environmental practices.
GBCpe, a nonprofit organization and a member of the World Green Building Council network, is a key driver of carbon emissions reduction in Peru’s construction sector. As a regional leader in sustainable development, GBCpe advocates for policy innovation and promotes practices that prioritize environmental sustainability, health, and equity in the built environment.
With Peru and Latin America increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, emissions reduction has become a national and regional priority. The Peruvian government has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 through its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with a target of net zero by 2050. The energy and building sectors are central to achieving these goals, making this partnership both timely and essential
“GBCpe is driving transformative change across Peru’s built environment by addressing emissions from both existing and new construction,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, President and CEO of GNFZ. “Their mission aligns seamlessly with ours at GNFZ. Through this partnership, we will bring world-class net zero strategies and implementation practices to the region, guiding businesses through certification and accelerating their path to verifiable net zero performance.”
GBCpe is already leading systemic change by focusing on whole-life carbon in buildings, fostering healthier and more inclusive spaces, and advancing regenerative, resource-efficient infrastructure. Their approach emphasizes cross-sector collaboration, education, and innovation in how communities and buildings are designed, constructed, and operated.
“We are excited to leverage GNFZ’s global expertise in net zero to support Latin America’s climate ambitions,” said Lucas Luis Sarmiento Lui, CEO of GBCpe. “This partnership reinforces Peru’s commitment to its NDCs and provides a critical foundation for reducing emissions in the building sector, an essential step in driving meaningful, measurable climate action across the economy.”
As part of the alliance, GNFZ's world premier net zero certification programs will be introduced to GBCpe's network and member organizations. The partnership will also deliver regional validation and review services for GNFZ clients while jointly advancing advocacy, market development, and education initiatives. Building on these efforts, GNFZ is supported by a regional advisory network in Latin America to reinforce its work, with a dedicated GNFZ Advisor for South America already in place to help accelerate the expansion and success of this collaboration.
Together, GNFZ and GBCpe will empower Peruvian companies with the tools, technologies, and knowledge they need to meet their sustainability targets and accelerate progress toward net zero.
